Trio of acclaimed musicians perform together April 3

March 23, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Each masters of their particular genre of music, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer join musical forces for Melody of Rhythm on April 3 at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

As individual artists, all three are known for their masterful genre-bending approach to music, and their ability to move with ease among the worlds of classical, bluegrass and world music. Fleck, Hussain and Meyer are three of the most limitless creators and composers in the history of music, sharing an unprecedented array of projects that touch every geographical and stylistic corner of the musical world.

Fleck has been called the premier banjo player in the world and has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map. At home equally in the great classical halls and concert arenas of the world, Fleck has won 11 Grammy Awards and has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history.

Hussain is today appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have not only established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, but earned him worldwide fame.

Meyer is prominently established as a unique and masterful instrumentalist and has an active career as both a performer and a composer. Hailed by the New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument,” Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore, where he is appreciated by a vast, varied audience.

Melody of Rhythm features these three masters of music in a unique concert experience that explores a variety of musical genres showcased through original works.

The performances are sponsored by the Dharma Endowment Foundation and Limerock Road.
