SIFE to provide help to unemployed local residents

March 22, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida’s Students in Free Enterprise are helping unemployed Gainesville residents become competitive job applicants.

They will be hosting Get a Job Gainesville, a free, one-day career re-entry conference. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23 at the Center for Innovation and Economic Development, 530 W. University Ave.

Formerly known as Women’s Career Expo, this is the sixth time they are hosting an event to help Gainesville residents gain confidence to start careers. This time, however, SIFE is opening the event to men, too.

Mallory Hodas, project manager, said it is important for all Gainesville residents to attend the workshops and seminars offered at the event to gain the tools they need to enter into successful careers.

At last year’s expo, SIFE helped 40 women gain the knowledge and skills to begin their careers, Hodas said. This year, they hope to attract even more unemployed Gainesville residents to the event.

They will offer resume critiques, mock interviews and booths to help individuals learn about resources that can help get them started.

“It’s not a career fair,” Hodas said, “It’s an opportunity to discover your strengths and empower yourself to apply for the right job as an outstanding applicant.”
