Florida Climate Institute seminar features NOAA Director

March 28, 2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Climate Institute Distinguished Scholar Seminar will feature Chet Koblinsky, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Program Office, presenting a seminar “Climate Information in Public Interest: Building the Network,” Thursday, at 3 p.m., UF’s Smathers
Library Room A1.

Across the country and the world, building resilient, sustainable human and ecological communities depends on how well systems can adjust to climate variability and change. Koblinsky and NOAA are deeply involved in working to meet these challenges. The academic community must play a critical role in this process, and NOAA’s national and international success depends on robust partnerships with the academic community.

As director of NOAA’s Climate Program Office and leader of its climate mission, Koblinsky leads NOAA’s future climate activities and climate competitive research programs. He joined NOAA in 2003 after a 25-year career as a research oceanographer and science manager at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. He led the development of research satellite missions including Aquarius, which will be launched in 2011.

He is a recipient of the Presidential Rank award for federal senior executives and NASA’s Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement.

The seminar is free and open to the public.
