Documentary produced by UF professor makes U.S. broadcast premiere

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — “NORA,” a swiftly moving poem of sound and image produced by University of Florida Fine Arts faculty member and Center for World Arts Director Joan Frosch, will be shown next week on 119 Public Broadcasting Service stations.

Directed by David Hinton and Alla Kovgan, it tells the story of choreographer Nora Chipaumire growing up in Zimbabwe during the second Chimurenga, or liberation war.

“NORA” will be broadcast by PBS affiliates from New York to Los Angeles at 7 p.m. Wednesday and again at midnight on the PBS World TV program “Afropop: The Ultimate Exchange.”

Local stations include WUFT-TV/DT: Channel 5.3 / Cox Cable 114 in Gainesville and WJCT Channel 7.3 / World Comcast 211 in Jacksonville.

The latest film project of the University of Florida Center for World Arts received an inaugural DANCE MOViES commission for the opening of EMPAC, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and was created in cooperation with the Center for African Studies, with additional support from the Fine Arts Scholarship Enhancement Fund and CAPTURE.

“NORA” has been officially selected for more than 100 international film festivals and was recently awarded the prestigious IMZ Gran Prix.
