UFPD will be looking for lights on bikes

November 16, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Police Department’s Community Services Division will operate a saturation detail seeking to educate bicyclists who don’t have headlights or taillights on their bikes Wednesday evening.

This detail will operate from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on the east side of campus.

With the time change, it gets dark earlier so the focus of this detail is to remind students of the need for lights on their bicycles as they ride on campus. Florida law requires all bicycles in use between sunset and sunrise be equipped with a white light on the front of the bicycle and a red light on the rear. Reflectors do not meet legal requirements.

UFPD police officers will also be distributing a red flashing light to assist with visibility at night, to bicyclists contacted during the detail. The Wal-Mart on Waldo Road will offer a 15 percent discount on light kits for all individuals issued a written warning during the detail.
