November 11, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida will host an all-day event Wednesday to showcase the use of geographic information systems, known as GIS, to the academic community and the public.

The event will be held in Smathers Library, Room 1A, and will include speakers, posters, exhibits, demonstrations and cake. Presentations on how GIS is used in real world applications will include how GIS was used to help with the Gulf oil spill and how GIS is used to track diseases.

The objectives of the day are:

1) To increase awareness of GIS including how it is being used in research and in practical applications to improve the community;

2) To provide a forum where the multitude of local companies, organizations, agencies and University of Florida departments who use GIS can share their work.
