College of Fine Arts, AIA, present lecture tonight

October 20, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The makeup of a home says a lot about culture of its inhabitants, according to the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA).

The Gainesville chapter of the AIA and the College of Fine Arts will present “The Archaeology of Archaic Cretan Houses” 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Computer Science and Engineering Room E101 to discuss the excavation of early 6th century BCE Archaic houses.

Margaret S. Mook, associate professor of classical studies at Iowa State University, will speak about how homes in eastern Crete have contributed to understandings about the form and function of the house in the Greek Aegean and the integration of domestic space in an urban context.

Professor Mook specializes in ancient Aegean archaeology, particularly that of Crete in the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age transition. She has taught in the classical studies program at Iowa State University since 1994 and previously taught at the College of William and Mary. She received her graduate degrees from the University of Minnesota.
The lecture, co-sponsored by a grant from the Archaeological Institute of America and by a generous private donation to the School of Art and Art History, is free and open to the public.
