Two distinguished musicians to be inducted into UF Bands Hall of Fame

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida College of Fine Arts School of Music will celebrate the achievements of Frank Wickes and Linda Moorhouse in a Hall of Fame Concert Sept. 30.

The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Auditorium, features the University of Florida Wind Symphony under the direction of David Waybright and the Symphonic Band under the direction of John Watkins. In addition to being honored, Wickes and Moorhouse will also make appearances as guest conductors.

The program will consist of Bernstein’s “Candide Overture,” Shostakovich’s “Folk Festival,” Fillmore’s “His Honor,” Dan Welcher’s “Zion,” and Copland’s “The Promise of Living” among other works.

The University of Florida Bands Hall of Fame recognizes the accomplishments of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of UF Bands who have helped to make a difference both in and out of the music community. Those honored in the Hall of Fame have made significant contributions to the UF concert band, marching band, and jazz band programs. Nominations and inductions into the Hall of Fame are based on these outstanding contributions.

Wickes served as director of bands at Louisiana State University from 1980 to 2010. Wickes held the rank of full professor in the College of Music and Dramatic Arts. He received degrees from the University of Delaware and the University of Michigan. From 1973 to 1980, he served as director of bands at UF and in 1976 was named Teacher of the Year in the College of Fine Arts.

Moorhouse joined the University of Illinois faculty in the fall of 2010 as a visiting associate professor of music. She conducts the University of Illinois Wind Orchestra and teaches courses in instrumental conducting. Moorhouse graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a bachelor of music education degree. As a UF student, she served as colorguard captain of the Gator Band from her freshman to senior years, played clarinet in the symphonic band and orchestra, and served as president of UF’s Delta Gamma chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. She received a a master’s in music education from LSU, and a doctoral degree in instrumental conducting from the University of Washington.
