September 22, 2010

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A sci-fi film fest at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Digital Worlds Institute will show how the genre of science fiction cinema developed.

The event will be hosted live from New York City by James Oliverio, professor of digital arts and sciences at the University of Florida and director of the institute.

Oliverio will give an overview of early sci-fi classics such as “War of the Worlds,” “Forbidden Planet” and “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and their contributions to the industry. The event is to encourage better appreciation of the early pioneers of sci-fi. After the presentation the attendees can choose which film they would like to watch in its entirety.

The event is free and will be held in 101 Norman Gym. It is hosted by the Digital Worlds Institute, a partnership between the College of Fine Arts and College of Engineering.

Another film fest will be hosted Sept. 30 with the films “Blade Runner,” “Tron” and “Avatar.”
