Fulbright highlighted by Program Day, annual reception at President’s House

May 10, 2010

Each year, several University of Florida faculty and students receive Fulbright scholarships to travel abroad for advanced research or graduate studies, teach at either the university level or elementary and secondary schools, or assist communities with numerous development challenges.

In an effort to increase awareness of the UF Fulbright Program, the International Center recently hosted a Fulbright Program Day. The event featured the participation of Fulbright program officers, Jamie Lawrence from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Edwin Bodensiek from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), which administers the Fulbright U.S. Scholar and Visiting Scholar Programs, and Lee Rivers from the Institute of International Education, which coordinates the U.S. Fulbright Student Program.

The event included faculty and student workshops, meetings with Fulbright campus representatives, and roundtable discussions with members of the UF Academic Advising Council. The program’s culmination, the Annual Fulbright Reception at the UF President’s House, was opened by President Bernie Machen, and attended by more than 200 Fulbright scholars, program administrators and guests. Machen highlighted the importance of the program for internationalizing the UF campus and making a contribution to global development.
