Local pedestrian safety to be promoted

March 2, 2010

“High Visibility Enforcement,” a campaign to promote pedestrian safety on the University of Florida campus and within Alachua County, is being coordinated by the Gainesville Police Department, University of Florida, Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and several other groups.

To increase visibility for drivers, additional pavement markings and signs have been placed in various pedestrian crossings throughout the county.

Officers will emphasize traffic enforcement for the next several months, with a specific focus during April, July and November. Currently, warnings are generally given to violators of pedestrian traffic rules.

Pedestrians may be ticketed for jaywalking and crossing during the “Do Not Walk” phase of a light cycle.
