GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The tragedy of Oedipus, who unknowingly slays his father and marries his mother, is one of the mythical cornerstones of Western civilization. The School of Theatre and Dance’s production is directed and adapted for the stage by Yanci Bukovec. In creating the adaption, Bukovec wanted to make the play available to everyone. “This performance adaption was created for a particular theatre and a particular audience in mind,” he said.

Oedipus is unique as it highlights the vocal and speech dynamics of this style of theatre. This adaption was made not with the scholars and purists in mind. “Some sections have a very contemporary feel and then we switch to a more stylized feel,” Bukovec said. “In choosing the classics we are able to develop the vocal and speech skills of the actors so they can leave with a well rounded education.”

Aided by oracles, a chorus and one of the greatest tragic figures in all of dramatic literature, the play focuses on Oedipus’ act of discovery and its consequences. The production explores the issues of fate, the theme of human intelligence and its limits and the place of domestic scandal in the public eye.

The show runs Jan. 29 – Feb.7 in the Nadine McGuire Black Box Theatre in the McGuire Theatre and Dance Pavilion.
