Haiti Assistance

January 15, 2010

Haiti is facing a humanitarian crisis and is in desperate need of medical help after Tuesday’s devastating earthquake. University of Florida Dr. Mark Atkinson is no stranger to helping Haitians. He has worked on medical and dental mission trips in the country for over a decade. He just returned about a week ago from Haiti and is making arrangements to fly back and help in recovery efforts. He expects this trip to be different from his most recent.

Dr. Mark Atkinson/UF Pathologist: “This trip will involve much more trauma situations, fractures, compound fractures, wounds, trying to battle infections, but from a totally different perspective.”

Dr. Atkinson organized eight people with disaster experience to participate in the trip. He expects to be in Haiti this weekend. He is busy ordering and preparing supplies for this trip to Saint-Marc, Haiti.

Dr. Mark Atkinson/UF Pathologist: “There are no doctors there and there are no supplies. Some of the supplies we had left on our trip last week were taken there last night and within an hour they were all consumed.”
