Lecture by leading scholar to focus on use of Bible in U.S. political history

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Mark Noll, a leading scholar of North American religious history, will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday in University Auditorium at the University of Florida.

Noll’s lecture, titled “The Bible and American Public Life,” will focus on the political use of Scripture and how the Bible has been used against and in support of public power.

Noll, a professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, has written numerous books, including “America’s God: From Jonathan Edwards to Abraham Lincoln,” “The Civil War as a Theological Crisis,” “The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind,” and most recently, “God and Race in American Politics.”

The lecture is free and sponsored by the Richard Milbauer Chair in History, the department of religion and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service. UF President Bernie Machen is scheduled to welcome guests.

The lecture is part of the ongoing lecture series at the University of Florida titled “Faithful Narratives: The Challenge of Religion in History.”
