Askew Institute to host long-term care conference in Orlando

October 21, 2009

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Reubin Askew Institute on Politics and Society will host a conference on long-term health care from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Doubletree Resort, 10100 International Drive, Orlando.

The event will feature leading experts in a discussion about long-term care financing reform and the steps Florida can take to provide solutions.

“We hope that participants in this meeting will be leaders in helping Florida develop better ways to ensure that our elderly and disabled have the services they need without impoverishing their families or the state,” said David Colburn, Askew Institute director.

Speakers include Douglas Beach, secretary of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs; Josh Wiener, senior fellow and program director of aging, disability and long-term care at RTI International; Larry Minnix, president and chief executive officer of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging; and other state and national experts on long-term health care.

Recent studies indicate that Florida faces a potential major crisis in meeting the demand for services for the aged and disabled over the next 20 years. How this issue gets resolved in Florida will say a great deal about how the issue is dealt with in other states, which will face similar demands in the future.

Registration is $30 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Register by calling 304-724-3004 and visit askew.clas.ufl.edu for more information.

This event is sponsored by the Askew Institute, the UF Florida Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.
