University of Florida College of Fine Arts presents A Streetcar Named Desire

September 18, 2009

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — From Sept. 18 through Sept. 27, the School of Theatre and Dance at the University of Florida will present A Streetcar Named Desire. The play is written by legendary playwright, Tennessee Williams.

A Streetcar Named Desire reveals the very depths of the character Blanche du Bois, a woman whose life has been undermined by her romantic illusions, which lead her to reject the realities of life she is faced with and consistently ignores.

The pressure brought upon her by her sister Stella, with whom she goes to live with in New Orleans, is intensified by the earthy and extremely sensual young husband of the latter and leads to a revelation of her tragic self-delusion and, in the end, to madness.

Director Judith Williams, who has a doctorate from the University of Michigan, has served as the producer/artistic director of the Champlain Shakespeare Festival from 1981-1985 and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education. Williams is most recently a recipient of the 2006 Florida Theatrical Association’s award for outstanding achievement in Live Theatre. Williams has directed more than seventy-five professional and university productions, and she is the founder and director of the International Theatre Production Program. Recently Williams directed Our Town, which produced full houses and standing ovations in Brazil.
