Free CPR course offered to UF students

April 10, 2009

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The CPR and Safety Training Center is offering a free CPR course for all University of Florida students from 4 to 5 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. on April 13 in Yon Hall, Room 271. UF students will be trained with the basic skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and be able to recognize the signs of cardiac emergency.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the U.S., so it is imperative for students to know how to react during an emergency. When cardiac arrest occurs, the heart stops pumping blood. CPR uses a combination of rescue breathing and chest compressions to support a small amount of blood flow to the heart and brain to “buy time” until normal heart function is restored.

The CPR and Safety Training Center is offering a 30-minute program to make students comfortable with performing CPR and activating the emergency response system during sudden cardiac arrest. All participants will receive a free CPR Anytime Kit to take home. This is a non-certification course and space is limited.
