GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Division of Student Affairs urges students who are visiting Mexico during spring break to be aware of travel warnings from the Department of State.

The federal agency urges caution, especially in areas along the country’s borders.

“U.S. citizens traveling throughout Mexico should exercise caution in unfamiliar areas and be aware of their surroundings at all times,” the statement reads. “Mexican and foreign bystanders have been injured or killed in violent attacks in cities across the country, demonstrating the heightened risk of violence in public places.”

Students are reminded that their safety during next week’s break is of the utmost importance whether they are staying in Gainesville, going home, or vacationing elsewhere. They are urged to use common sense and look after themselves and others.

There have been increased reports of thefts in the Gainesville area, so students are urged to lock their homes and cars. If driving somewhere, they should do so carefully and plan for plenty of travel time, particularly when returning to Gainesville. Finally, they should travel in groups, know their surroundings, and drink responsibly if they are of legal age.
