Student-scholarship deadline approaching, March 20

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ā€” Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections is offering three $1,200 scholarships to local college or university students.

Pam Carpenter, Alachua County supervisor of elections, announced the opportunity for local students to apply for a $1,200 scholarship through the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections (FSASE).

The three scholarships will be awarded in June. March 20 is the deadline to submit applications to the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections.

The scholarships will be awarded to full-time students attending an accredited Florida university or college.

Applicants must be enrolled or accepted as a junior or senior and major in political science, public or business administration, or journalism or mass communications.

Applicants must perform the following:

  • Demonstrate a financial need and furnish a financial statement that indicates their personal contribution to their educational expenses.
  • Submit two current letters of recommendation, which must accompany the application or be received by the deadline. One recommendation must be from a teacher or individual from the college or university the student last attended or graduated from. The second recommendation must be from a citizen of good standing in the community.
  • Submit a resume of their high school and/or college activities, as well as their community service activities.
  • Maintain a ā€œCā€ average, or above, for the previous academic year.
  • Be a U.S. citizen and a Florida resident for two years preceding the academic year for which the student is applying for.
  • Be a registered voter.

Students may obtain applications from the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office at 111 S.E. 1st Ave., Gainesville, Fla. or online at http://www.votealachua.com. Students must submit completed applications and letters of recommendation to the Supervisor of Elections of the county in which they are registered to vote.

All Alachua County applications will be reviewed by the Supervisor of Elections Office, and one finalist will be forwarded to the FSASE Scholarship Committee to represent Alachua County. The FSASE Scholarship Committee will select three winners, awarded $1,200 each, from finalists submitted by Supervisors of Elections throughout the State of Florida.
