53 Gators selected to SEC Academic Honor Roll

January 29, 2009

Birmingham, Ala. — League Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Wednesday that 53 University of Florida student athletes were named to the 2008-’09 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. UF ranked third among the SEC schools for Academic Honor Roll recipients. Kentucky led the list with 60 student athletes, while South Carolina ranked second with 59 Honor Roll athletes.

The 2008-’09 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008 spring, summer and fall terms.

Three of Florida’s honorees turned in 4.0 grade-point averages for the year: Kelsey Bowers (volleyball), Robert Kane (football) and Megan Kerns (soccer).

UF’s BCS National Championship football team tied with Vanderbilt for a league-record 37 football players on the current Honor Roll. The league’s previous high for football was 36 student athletes, earned by Vanderbilt’s 2002 team. The previous UF high for football was in 2004 when 26 players were named to the Honor Roll.

To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; be on scholarship, a letter-winner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
