Florida Players announces first production of fall season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Players, sponsored by UF student government, under the direction of Artistic Director Michelle Karst, is pleased to announce the first production of its fall 2008 season – David Hare’s “The Bay at Nice.”

Leading the production team is UF graduate student Kent Barrett, who directed last year’s New Works Festival production of “Somewhere in America” and has won numerous design awards with Florida Players. “The Bay at Nice” will make its premiere from Oct. 17 through 19 at the Phillips Center.

Show times are 8 p.m. on Oct. 17, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m on Oct. 19. As always, the performances are free and open to the public. “The Bay at Nice” is a story about the strength of love and family obligation, daring to explore the authenticity of relationships, principles and art. Students, as well as members of the Gainesville artistic community, are urged to attend the opening of this historical theatrical work as it makes its UF premiere later this month.

Florida Players, a student-run theater company funded by UF Student Government, provides opportunities for students of all majors to explore the world of theater and showcase their talents in doing so. Since its founding in 1932, the organization’s purpose has been to facilitate the acclimation of students into the professional theatre environment. To do this, they produce plays and musicals throughout the academic school year. Florida Players also hosts master classes led by professional artists in the field, most recently being Tony Award nominee Manoel Felciano and Tony Award winner Katie Finneran.
