Glover named University of Florida provost effective July 1

May 2, 2008

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Joe Glover, interim dean of the University of Florida College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been named provost effective July 1, President Bernie Machen announced today.

Glover succeeds Janie Fouke, who announced in March that she was stepping down.

Machen said he chose not to conduct a search for a new provost because Glover is uniquely qualified. As the interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a former associate provost, he has extensive familiarity with UF, Machen said. In addition, he said, Glover is well versed in Florida’s budget process and its effect on higher education.

“That high level of experience and understanding is invaluable in this time of budget challenges,” Machen said. “Joe has proven himself as solid, knowledgeable and well-respected. He has the perfect combination of foresight and institutional memory, and that makes him the ideal person for this job.”

Glover said he looks forward to the challenge and to returning to an area he’s familiar with.

“While the university faces fiscal challenges currently, it also has wonderful opportunities to chart a successful course into the future as one of this nation’s prestigious public land-grant research institutions,” he said. “I am excited to have the opportunity to help chart that course and to advance UF’s mission in education, research and outreach in partnership with the university community.”

Glover has served as interim CLAS dean since January 2007. He was associate provost for six years, including nine months as interim provost. His responsibilities included enrollment management, tenure and promotion and other faculty issues. He chaired the Task Force on the Future of the University of Florida, participated in developing the university strategic plan, and represents UF on the executive board of the New World School of the Arts.

Glover’s relationship with UF dates to 1982 when he was named an assistant professor in the department of mathematics. He was department chairman from 1993 to 1998 and associate dean for faculty affairs in CLAS from 1998 to 2001.

A native of New York, Glover received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of California, San Diego. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Rochester before joining the University of Florida faculty. He also held a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at UCSD in 1982. His awards include an NSF-CNRS fellowship held at the Universite de Grenoble II, a CLAS Teaching Award and a mentoring award from the McKnight Foundation.

Glover signed a three-year contract and will be paid $300,000 annually.
