UF Agricultural Women's Club celebrates 100 years

April 8, 2008

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In 1908, just two years after the University of Florida opened the doors of its Gainesville campus, an organization called the Extension Club was formed to help the wives of newly arrived College of Agriculture personnel become better acquainted with each other and the community.

A century later the group is still going strong, though it’s now called the Agricultural Women’s Club, a name adopted in 1947. Its mission now includes promoting community service, scholarship and diversity within the UF community.

On April 17 from 5-7 p.m., the club will formally celebrate its 100th anniversary with a reception at the President’s House, 2151 W. University Ave. The event will include presentation of the club’s first Women of Distinction Award to citrus and cattle producer Hariot Greene, and recognition of four female graduate students receiving scholarships associated with the club.

The public is invited to attend the reception. Admission is $30 per person and reservations are required; the deadline for reservations is April 10. For more information contact Dee Ann Connor at 352-335-4806.
