Two UF percussion ensembles will perform in April concerts

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Percussion Ensemble and Sunshine Steelers will demonstrate their skills and talents in percussion repertoire and with percussion instruments during two back-to-back concerts April 7 and 8.

The University of Florida Percussion Ensemble will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 7 in the University Auditorium. The concert will feature works by two of the most influential composers of percussion and chamber music in the United States today, David Maslanka and Eric Ewazen.

The University of Florida Sunshine Steelers will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. April 8 in the University Auditorium. The bands will perform socas and calypsos written by composers from Trinidad, the steel pan’s country of origin, and the United States.

The concerts will highlight the diversity and range of percussion music as well as the capacity of percussion instruments. Both UF College of Fine Arts ensembles will be under the direction of School of Music professor Kenneth Broadway, with the assistance of graduate students Shane Reeves and Luke Thatcher.
