GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tom Fortner, director of the University of Florida Health Science Center’s Office of News & Communications, was recently elected chairman of the steering committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Institutional Advancement.

The AAMC represents and supports the education, research and patient-care missions of medical schools and teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada. Its Group on Institutional Advancement is one of 15 professional development groups within the AAMC, composed of individuals at member institutions who work in public relations, marketing, public affairs, alumni affairs and fundraising.

Fortner, who has held a variety of positions on the GIA steering committee, was elected to a one-year term at the group’s National Professional Development Conference in San Diego in late March. He has worked at UF for four years.
