UF Wind Symphony performs at 74th annual American Bandmasters Association conference

GAINESVILLE, Fla.—The University of Florida Wind Symphony has been invited perform at the prestigious 74th Annual American Bandmasters Association conference, which will be held March 5-9 at the University of Miami.

The UF Wind Symphony will perform at 8 p.m. on March 6 in the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami as one of five featured performing groups during the ABA conference.

The evening’s program includes Richard Strauss’ “Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare,” Donald Grantham’s “Baron Cimetières Mambo,” Karel Husa’s “Music for Prague 1968,” Arthur Pryor’s “Blue Bells of Scotland” and Henry Fillmore’s “Men of Florida.” Guest conductors include Johnnie B. Vinson, Thomas G. Leslie, William V. Johnson, William Berz, Richard Clary and Adam F. Brennan.

The UF Wind Symphony, housed in the College of Fine Arts School of Music, is the premier concert ensemble for the university band program, which includes 12 different concert and athletic band ensembles. The UF Wind Symphony is world renowned and has performed throughout the United States and abroad. They have commissioned and premiered many new works and have been instrumental in furthering the repertory of the wind band. There are many recordings available of the Wind Symphony through Mark Records. The ensemble has performed numerous concerts at every important music conference over the past 20 years. In 2005, the University of Florida hosted the ABA conference in Gainesville. This year’s appearance marks the third performance of the UF Wind Symphony at this conference.

The American Bandmasters Association has been committed to the preservation of American band history since it was established more than 70 years ago with the mission to enhance the interest in and quality of bands in America.
