GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Common Reading Program marks its second year in 2008-2009 with the announcement of the book selection on Friday.

The program requires all first-year students to read a common book prior to beginning their college career (either summer B or fall semester). Each year, the book is selected by a committee of UF faculty, staff, and students with the intent to spark dialogue, encourage critical thinking, and provide a shared experience for all new Gators.

In the 2007-2008 inaugural year, the committee selected “Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World,” written by Tracy Kidder. Kidder spoke on campus last fall, and this year’s author will do the same.

Copies of the chosen book will be distributed to new first-year students when they attend Preview, the summer orientation program. The entire campus and Gainesville community is encouraged to read the selected book and participate in the events this fall, including the author’s visit.

The unveiling will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday on the Plaza of the Americas (Rain location: Digital Media Center, third floor Library West).
