Argentine dance company tangos at the Phillips Center on Nov. 20

November 7, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — An Argentine dance company tangos its way into the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in November for a passionate and seductive performance of the country’s most imitated dance.

Tango Buenos Aires, a company of 25 dancers and musicians, perform the Argentine tango, which is regarded by many as being the “true” tango.

In its beginnings, the tango was an ill-famed dance, not only because it was usually performed in dance halls and cabarets, but also because the choreography called for the couple to hold each other very close. Tango choreography allows for a lot of creativity, requiring breaks in the rhythm and perfect coordination between the dancers.

Redolent of romance, probably due to the close proximity of the dancers, the tango has become a symbol of passion and seduction.

Tango Buenos Aires performs at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 20 in the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. A pre-performance discussion with the company begins at 6:45 p.m. Tickets cost $15-$30 and are available at the Phillips Center Box Office, University Box Office at the University of Florida Reitz Union and all Ticketmaster outlets as well as on the Web at www.ticketmaster.com. Ticket can also be obtained by calling 352-392-ARTS or toll free in Florida 800-905-ARTS.
