UF Center for World Arts and School of Music present “Jacaré Sinfonico”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A brilliant collaboration gives the community to experience the harmonious and rhythmic sounds of Brazil without having to leave the country.

The College of Fine Arts Center for World Arts, School of Music and UF’s Center for Latin American Studies present a performance by the “Jacaré Brazil” and UF Wind Symphony ensembles with special guests Julio Cesar de Figueiredo and Roberto Sion, 7:30 p.m., Oct.10 at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The first half of the concert features the Wind Symphony, under the direction of David Waybright, performing Latin American music, Paul Basler’s Overture, and the Paulista Suite which pays homage to São Paulo, Brazil, with voices and accompaniment by Julio Cesar de Figueiredo, world-renowned pianist and arranger. The second half of the show features Roberto Sion, saxophonist and flutist, for a session on Brazilian jazz. He will be accompanied by Jacaré Brazil’s percussionists and instrumentalists, under the direction of School of Music professors, Welson Tremura and Larry Crook.

Julio Cesar de Figueiredo’s arrangements for symphonic band, string orchestra, string trios, string duets and songs for voice and piano have been acclaimed throughout Brazil. He has been designated as the main musical arranger for the city of São Paulo Symphonic Band. Figueiredo composes sound tracks for radio advertisements and television commercials, and has been teaching theory, chamber music, counterpoint and arranging techniques at the São Paulo Mozarteum College of Music and Universidade Livre de Música Tom Jobim.
Roberto Sion is among the most respected and active names in the Brazilian instrumental music scene. Marrying jazz with Brazilian musical styles of Bossa Nova, Samba and others, Sion is an accomplished alto-saxophonist, flutist and clarinetist as well as a respected composer, arranger, conductor and professor.
