Museum Nights features gallery talk, “Art:21″ premiere

October 11, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Thursday, Oct. 11 is another busy Museum Nights at the Harn Museum of Art. In addition to the galleries being open until 9 p.m., UF School of Art and Art History director Anna Calluori Holcombe will present a gallery talk at 6 p.m. through the new exhibition “The Ceramics of Toshiko Takaezu: Function, Form and Surface.” Following the gallery talk, the Harn has partnered with WUFT-TV to premiere excerpts from the fourth season of the PBS series “Art:21″ at 7 p.m. Following the showings, Harn MUSEs will conduct tours related to the season’s themes. Refreshments will be available.

“The Ceramics of Toshiko Takaezu: Function, Form and Surface” opened Oct. 5 with 15 recent gifts from the renowned ceramic artist. Anna Calluori Holcombe is herself an internationally recognized ceramist who started as director of art and art history this fall semester, coming from Kansas State University.

“Art:21,” the nation’s only primetime television series focusing on contemporary art and artists, premieres on PBS Oct. 28. Each 14-minute, season-four segment investigates one of four themes: romance, protest, ecology and paradox. Robert Adams, an artist featured in an ecology segment, is on display in the Harn exhibition “Highlights from the Photography Collection.” Other segments that will be screened Oct. 11 feature artists Pierre Huyghe, An-My Lê, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla.

The evening is co-sponsored by UF Student Government. The “Art:21″ screening is part of “Art:21 Access ‘07,” a celebration of contemporary art and creativity at more than 200 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces and community centers, presented by “Art21″ in partnership with Americans for the Arts during National Arts and Humanities Month.
