Homecoming offers fun for all

October 23, 2007

Each year, students, faculty, staff and alumni pack Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and flow through the streets of campus for a weekend of football and festivities, in celebration of the University of Florida’s Homecoming.

Gator Growl, featuring performances by comedian and impressionist Frank Caliendo and legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, will once again headline the list of events. The world’s largest student-run pep rally kicks off at 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 at The Swamp.

In addition to Growl and the football game, Homecoming 2007 offers many activities. Here are just a few:

  • Gator Gallop, at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 2, is a two-mile run which will immediately precede the Homecoming Parade. Gator fans of all ages are invited to begin at Percy Beard Track, and then walk, roll or run. Pets are invited, too. Contact the Florida Blue Key office for entry information and other details.
  • Homecoming Parade, starting at noon Nov. 2 on University Avenue, promises a good time as Gators celebrate Homecoming and the parade’s 84th year.
  • Florida Blue Key Alumni Reunion, 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 is exclusively for FBK members and their guests. The event will honor 50-year members. Admission is $15, and a silent auction is included.
  • Post-Growl VIP Reception, 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 at the UF Hillel, will offer an opportunity to mingle with young alumni and Gator Growl talent. The cocktail atmosphere will include catered snacks, drinks and live entertainment. Tickets $10 at the door.
  • Homecoming Alumni Barbecue, beginning two and one-half hours before kick-off on Nov. 3 at the O’Connell Center, will provide an air-conditioned tailgating experience, along with food, performances by the Dazzlers and Albert and Alberta, prizes, games for all ages and kid-friendly face-painting. Advance tickets $8 at the University Box Office; $10 at the door.
