Susan G. Komen for the Cure national education tour visits University of Florida

September 21, 2007

On Monday, Sept. 24, UF Student Health Care Center will host Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s community education and outreach tour in the O’Connell Center parking lot. Komen on the Go is a nationwide initiative delivering life-saving breast health information to all generations of women. The tour’s stop at UF is one of more than 150 stops across the country to heighten awareness of breast health and breast cancer and drive a deeper commitment from young women to commit to everyday health habits to reduce their risk for the disease.

WHAT: The Komen On the Go pink trailer converts into an interactive learning center. This fun, hands-on experience features computer kiosks, breast cancer educational materials, breast self-examination (BSE) guides, information on how to volunteer locally, tips on supporting loved ones facing breast cancer and an eight-foot “graffiti wall” for students to share a memory or pledge their personal support in the cause to end breast cancer.

Local breast cancer survivors and health care professionals will be on hand to share their experiences and knowledge. Chris Machen, wife of UF President Bernie Machen and co-chairwoman of Healthy Gators 2010, is scheduled to make an appearance at the event. Also scheduled are Patricia Telles-Irvin, vice president for student affairs, and Shelly Meyer, wife of football coach Urban Meyer. Zeta Tau Alpha supports this event and plans to participate.

BACKGROUND: Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
