Groups urge good deeds to honor Sept. 11 victims

September 10, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gainesville’s annual Good Deed Mitzvah Marathon on Tuesday will commemorate the victims of Sept. 11 in Turlington Plaza on the University of Florida campus.

The Lubavitch-Chabad Jewish Student and Community Center and the Chabad-Lubavitch Student Group are sponsoring the event to commemorate the sixth anniversary of Sept. 11. It will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is designed to present members of the campus community with opportunities to do a good deed in memory of Sept. 11 victims.

Tables will be set up on Turlington Plaza where participants will be able to choose from good deeds such as making sandwiches for the homeless, writing cards to children at Shands, buying a letter in a Torah scroll, saying a prayer or giving money to benefit the victims of genocide in Darfur. Participants will fill out a form to document their good deed to attach to a picture of a victim of Sept. 11 and then fasten it to a small wooden replica of the Twin Towers, which will then become the twin towers of good deeds and love. Each participant will receive a sticker acknowledging his or her good deed. At 12:45 p.m., a moment of silence will take place in memory of the victims.
