Florida Players announce first show of season

September 21, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Players, a student-run theater company funded by University of Florida Student Government, will premiere “The Shape of Things” at the University of Florida Phillips Center Blackbox Theatre from Oct. 4 through Oct. 7.

A provocative and surprising story of a young, female artist remaking an awkward young man, Neil LaBute’s “The Shape of Things” vividly challenges the fragility of friendship, the illusion of love, and the conflict between art and morality. Set in a contemporary locale, the play, also a major motion picture from 2003, unfolds and amplifies playwright Neil LaBute’s parables on modern love, perception, image, and art. The play is suggested for mature audiences only.

The production will be helmed by Jennifer Shorstein, marking her directorial debut at the University of Florida.

Showtimes for this limited engagement are Oct. 4 at 8 p.m., Oct. 5 at 8 p.m., Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. & 8 p.m., and Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. The performances are free and open to the public. Tickets can be reserved through the Florida Players website www.floridaplayers.org.

Florida Players provides opportunities for students of all majors to explore the world of theater and showcase their talents. The organization strives on supplying the University’s artistic student body with ongoing opportunities to expand their knowledge in the field of theater.
