Carillon music to honor victims of Sept. 11 attacks

September 11, 2007

The daily live carillon performance at the University of Florida’s Century Tower will ring a special note today in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The 12:35 p.m. performance will commence with Ben Wasmuth playing a John Courter composition “In Memoriam – September 11, 2001”.

Courter, who was college carilloneur at Berea College in Kentucky from the time the carillon was installed until his retirement in 2007, dedicated his original composition to “those whose lives were lost in the terrorist attacks.”

The UF Carillon program is lead by Laura Ellis, an associate professor in the School of Music at the College of Fine Arts. The carillon series continues with daily performances from 12:35 to 12:50 p.m., while classes are in session. In addition to the daily concerts, the program hosts The Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, which continues through the fall with recitals at 3 p.m. Oct. 21, Nov. 18 and Dec. 16.
