Breast cancer awareness program visits O’Connell Center lot Sept. 24

September 21, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 24, the O’Connell Center parking lot will be more than just a place to park cars. It will be a place to educate and raise awareness of breast cancer.

Komen on the Go, housed in a colorful pink cruiser, is a community education and outreach program. The event will feature various activities designed to teach visitors about breast cancer. Survivors of the disease, as well as medical professionals, will be on hand to share their experiences. Event visitors can sign a graffiti wall to either pledge support for the cause or share memories of a loved one’s experiences with breast cancer. Students, faculty and staff are all encouraged to attend.

UF’s first lady, Chris Machen, is a supporter of the event and expected to attend.

“The more women we can reach with the information they give out, the better,” she said. “Breast cancer is a very treatable disease, and early detection is key.”

The Student Health Care Center and Healthy Gators 2010 are co-sponsors of this event.
