UPD event aims to prevent crime

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Police Department will host its inaugural National Night Out Against Crime celebration from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Flavet Field on UF’s campus.

National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime efforts.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and residents are fighting back.

This year’s event will showcase vehicles from UF’s police department, Gainesville Fire and Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, as well as the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office’s Dragster. Domino’s Pizza and Pepsi will be given away. Prizes to be given away include a basketball signed by the men’s basketball Coach Billy Donovan and a football signed by football Coach Urban Meyer.
