August 20, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Contemporary Cuban artist Glexis Novoa will present a lecture at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Harn Museum of Art in conjunction with the exhibition “Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection.”

Novoa was born in Holguin, Cuba, in 1964, moved to Mexico in 1993 and then relocated to Miami in 1995. His lecture, titled “Living in Miami and Havana,” will discuss his work “On the Practical Stage,” currently on display in the Harn exhibition “Cuba Avant-Garde.”

Novoa is best known for meticulously rendered graphite landscapes that focus not on the natural world but on the built environment. His site-specific graphite wall drawings have been exhibited internationally at numerous acclaimed institutions and galleries.

“Cuba Avant-Garde” explores the full scope of contemporary Cuban art history beginning with the crucial period of the early 1980s, which saw a resurgence in artistic production and political openness that marked the birth of “New Cuban Art.” Organized by the Harn Museum, it features 58 works by 40 diverse artists and is on display at the Harn through Sept. 9, when it travels to the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota for exhibit through the end of 2007.

Admission to the Harn Museum of Art is free. For more information visit www.harn.ufl.edu or call 352-392-9826.
