June 14, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D. Grant McFadden, program director of the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Emerging Pathogens Initiative, has been elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology.

McFadden has progressively dissected the pathophysiology and immunologic responses of poxvirus infection. This work has led to an understanding of the complex proinflammatory/anti-inflammatory interactions responsible for the associated morbidity and mortality and possible prevention of disease. He received his Ph.D. from the McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology are elected annually through a highly selective, peer-reviewed process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. There are now more than 2,500 Fellows representing all subspecialties of microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry and government service.
