Annual ‘Fanfares and Fireworks’ set for July 3 at Flavet Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Public broadcasting stations WUFT-TV, Channel 5, WUFT-DT, Digital 36, WUFT-FM, Classic 89 and WJUF-FM, Nature Coast 90 will present “Fanfares and Fireworks,” the annual Independence Day eve celebration, on Tuesday, July 3 beginning at 7 p.m. at the University of Florida Flavet Field. The 17th annual event is sponsored by the City of Gainesville; AvMed Health Plan and the University of Florida.

“Fanfares and Fireworks” will feature a variety of musical groups, an opportunity for families and individuals to picnic in the grass, and a spectacular fireworks show. The lineup includes Delta cracker blues from Hamhock & Slide, contemporary urban jazz, funk and soul music from GruvTherapy and traditional favorites by the Gainesville Community Band under the direction of Gerald Poe.

“Fanfares and Fireworks” is free and open to the public, however, precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of all in attendance. No sparklers, pets or alcoholic beverages will be allowed at Flavet Field.

WUFT-TV/DT and WUFT/WJUF-FM Director of Development and Community Relations Brent Williams and Friends of Five Board Member Ilene Silverman-Budd will serve as emcees. During the event, LifeSouth Blood Centers will conduct a much-needed blood drive. Concessions will be available for purchase.

“Fanfares and Fireworks” will conclude with a fireworks extravaganza set to the music of the Gainesville Community Band. The fireworks, by Skylighters of Florida, are expected to begin around 9:40 p.m.
