UF Speech and Hearing Clinic offers free screenings

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — In honor of national Better Hearing and Speech Month, the University of Florida Speech and Hearing Clinic is offering free screenings throughout May by appointment.

More than 30 million Americans are estimated to be suffering from a speech, language or hearing disorder. Since 1927, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has organized Better Hearing and Speech Month to raise public awareness.

An annual hearing checkup is recommended for those 45 and older, according to UF audiologists. Common symptoms of hearing loss include: pain or ringing in the ears, frequently asking others to repeat themselves, having a difficult time understanding others without wearing glasses or looking the subject directly in the face, difficulty following a group conversation and complaints from others about the chosen volume level of radios or televisions.

Those who identify with these symptoms should see an audiologist for a hearing test, according to UF audiologist Michelle Colburn. “Even a very slight hearing loss can have an impact on your daily life,” she said. “Hearing loss is treatable, and there is no reason for anyone to miss all of the important sounds of life.”

Speech problems can also limit academic achievement, social adjustment and career advancement, according to UF speech-language pathologist Judy Wingate. “Fortunately most people with speech and language problems can be helped,” said Wingate. “Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, we can teach people strategies to help them cope.
