Career Resource Center helps even after graduation

With graduation just days away, the University of Florida’s Career Resource Center has this message for graduates: It is not too late to start planning your future.

“It’s our job to show students how to make the most of their University of Florida diploma,” said Nadene Francis, assistant director of public relations.

On May 10, the center will co-sponsor a statewide career fair, boasting more than 100 companies looking to hire recent graduates. The fair will be held at the T.D. Waterhouse Convention Center in Orlando and is a good way for students to get their resumes in the hands of some of Florida’s best business recruiters.

“It is never too late to take the first step,” Francis said.

The Career Resource Center provides an array of services to assist students with all aspects of a job search.

Beginning with career counseling or advising, trained counselors help students identify the fields and careers they are best suited for. Once a student has an idea of what they are looking for, the center offers an online career portal called Gator CareerLink, which is updated daily with new job and internship opportunities.

But the center’s services don’t stop there. Students can bring in their resumes and cover letters to be critiqued or even schedule mock interviews.
Besides the statewide career fair, the center also sponsors between five and seven career showcases each year that are open to all UF students and alumni.

For students who prefer to study options on their own, the center has a library with books containing information on subjects from applying to graduate schools to working or studying abroad opportunities.

“A degree from UF is only worth what a student makes of it,” Francis said.

The goal of the Career Resource Center is to give students the opportunities they need to make that degree priceless.
