April 11, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The College of Health and Human Performance College Council and Gator Sport Management Club are hosting Hoops for Life, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament to benefit the March of Dimes. The tournament begins at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Florida Gymnasium.

Teams must have three or four players prior to registering, and all participants must be UF students, faculty or staff and present a valid UFID card at the tournament. Registration forms are available in the Florida Gym outside of Room 200 on the March of Dimes bulletin board. The entry fee is $20 per team and must be turned in to Room 200 of the Florida Gym with the registration form by Friday.

Tournament tip-off starts promptly at 2 p.m. Games will be half court 3-on-3, 20 minutes in length with a running clock. Teams are allowed a single one-minute timeout per game. In addition to the basketball tournament, there will be a three-point shoot-out contest and a door prize drawing. The College of Health and Human Performance and College Council will be providing free food, drinks and prizes for players and attendees. The HHP March of Dimes T-shirt that won first place at WalkAmerica will be on sale at Hoops for Life for $10.

Research has shown that in an average week in Florida, 563 babies are born premature. After two of HHP’s staff members had premature babies, the college now holds this charity close to their hearts. The college has set a goal to raise $5,000 this semester for the March of Dimes by holding various fundraisers.

“The students really wanted to organize and sponsor a fundraiser to help the college reach its goal and we thought a basketball tournament would be a great way to get students, faculty and staff involved,” said Terina Lopez, college council president.
