GAINESVILLE, Fla. — On April 29, the Harn Museum of Art exhibition “Continuity and Change: Three Generations of Ethiopian Artists” will close. The exhibition marks the first featuring so many contemporary Ethiopian artists under one roof.

The exhibit tells the story of modern and contemporary art in Ethiopia from the 1940s to the present and explores the role of artists as part of the strategy for the modernization of Ethiopia. It also examines the influence of the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa, one of Africa’s leading art academies.

“Having made six research trips to Ethiopia, I have fallen in love with the country’s fascinating history, culture and art,” said Harn Museum of Art Director Rebecca Martin Nagy, who has been organizing the exhibition since 2000.

The exhibit will travel to the Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University, where it will be displayed from May 25 to Dec. 8.

The fully illustrated catalogue includes essays by co-curator Achamyeleh Debela, Heran Sereke-Brhan and Shiferaw Bekele, Geta Mekonnen, Rebecca Martin Nagy and Leah Niederstadt and catalogue entries by Rebecca Martin Nagy with the assistance of Jaime Baird and Nicholas Frech.

Admission to the Harn Museum of Art is free. For more information, visit www.harn.ufl.edu or call 352-392-9826.
