UF College of Journalism and Communications seeking dean applicants

March 30, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications is now accepting applications for a new dean who will help maintain its winning traditions.

Like UF’s champion athletic teams, the college has won national awards — 55 in recent years.

“The dean must be a visionary administrator who will lead the college into the new era of communication,” said Douglas Jones, chairman of the Dean Search Committee. “We expect great things at UF and the position demands an innovative, collegial leader strongly committed to the teaching and learning process and to the highest standards for scholarly research and service.”

The UF College of Journalism and Communications has more than 70 full-time faculty members and a full-time staff of more than 90. It has approximately 3,500 undergraduate majors and more than 200 graduate students. The college offers accredited baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral degrees through four academic departments: advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications. Interdisciplinary graduate programs in science/health, international and intercultural, political, mass communication law and documentary film also are offered.

The college also hosts two television and four radio stations including the Public Broadcasting System, high-definition and low-power educational TV, commercial radio and National Public Radio. The stations are fully integrated into the curriculum and support the educational and teaching mission as well as meet the needs of a diverse community.

Like UF’s renowned football and basketball teams, the college has won numerous national championships, Jones noted. “The list includes 26 first-place Hearst Awards for news and feature writing, seven first-place Bateman Public Relations Case Study Awards, and six first-place AEJMC Visual Communication awards. Our Documentary Film Institute has won eight best-of-show titles, and our faculty and alumni have won eight Pulitzer Prizes. Heady stuff, even for The Gator Nation,” he said.
