Florida Players kicks off spring season with ‘Revolution’

February 9, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida Players wastes no time in presenting its first production of the spring season. “The Three-Piece Suit Revolution” will be staged Feb. 23-25 at the Phillips Center’s Black Box Theatre on the University of Florida campus. Showtimes are 8 p.m., Feb. 23 and 24; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Feb. 25.

“The Three-Piece Suit Revolution” consists of two short plays: “The Dutchman” by Amiri Baraka and “Los Vendidos” by Luis Valdez. The production offers audiences a night of “revolutionary theater,” as the two plays were each instrumental in earning respect and recognition for minorities in the theater and in society in general.

“The pieces portray a continuing plague in modern society — cultural assimilation,” co-director George E. Salazar said. “Individuality and one’s own heritage have been surrendered for decades, and that sacrifice to ‘fit in’ was essentially what fueled these two legendary playwrights to write their works and what has also fueled Florida Players to produce these pieces.”

The two plays are not recommended for young audiences as the issues are controversial and the language is suggestive.

The performances are free and open to the public. To reserve tickets, send an e-mail totickets@floridaplayers.org.

Florida Players is a student-run theater company funded by UF Student Government. The group offers students of all majors a chance to explore the world of theater and to showcase their talents. For more information on Florida Players, visit the Web at www.floridaplayers.org.
