Eta Sigma Gamma to host annual Sex in the Swamp event

February 28, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Students in the University of Florida’s College of Health and Human Performance will hold the annual Sex in the Swamp event Thursday to educate UF students about the importance of safe sex practices.

This yearly event provides an entertaining way of educating students about relationships, drinking, tobacco and drug use, and sexually transmitted infections.

Members of Eta Sigma Gamma, the national professional health education honor society, will provide information about safe and healthy behavior starting at 7 p.m. in Club 1982, 919 W. University Ave.

“Eta Sigma Gamma offers this event as a way to encourage an open dialogue between people about human sexuality and its role in our daily lives,” said Virginia Dodd, assistant professor in the Department of Health Education and Behavior and ESG faculty adviser.

The theme of this year’s event is Mardi Gras with a slogan of “Show Your Wits.” Volunteers will discuss the importance of being informed and distribute helpful materials. The purpose is to promote safe sexual behavior and to inform students about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and contraception.

Students will have the opportunity to play interactive and educational games related to relationships and sexual conduct. A “Sexpert Panel” also will be available to answer questions.

“Sex in the Swamp is an important event for all members of the university community to attend because it gives students the opportunity to talk with experts in human sexuality, as well as interact with one another in a comfortable, fun environment,” said Dodd.
