UF event commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Campus Ministry and the Dean of Students Office at the University of Florida are joining to help Gainesville celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day at a public event planned from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the Plaza of the Americas on the UF campus.

Along with displays of photographs from the Rev. Martin Luther King’s life and a timeline of the civil rights movement, original footage from King’s “I Have A Dream” speech will be played on a large-screen television. There will be readings of excerpts from King’s speeches and letters, performances by student groups and singing. Campus leaders and local personalities, including the Rev. Karl Anderson of Magic 101.3′s “Churching With the Rev.”, will be taking part in the event.

The event is free, but donations will be accepted to support a planned Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington, D.C. UF students, faculty and staff who donate $5 or more will receive a “Build the Dream” wristband. In case of rain, the event will be held in the Reitz Student Union Auditorium.
