Guthrie Family Legacy Tour coming to Phillips Center

January 22, 2007

GAINESVILLE, FL –– The Guthrie Family Legacy Tour, a concert tour with “Woody,” Arlo Guthrie and his family, will be presented at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 8, at the Phillips Center on the University of Florida campus.

Arlo Guthrie, along with his son Abe, daughter Sarah Lee and her husband, Johnny Irion, form the core band. They have all contributed to the family legacy by writing and performing their own material.

There are millions of people who know Woody Guthrie. There are even more who are familiar with his songs such as “This Land is Your Land” or “The Reno Blues.” Others have come to know Woody through his friends such as Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan. On the Legacy Tour’s menu are these favorites, some of Arlo’s newest songs, plus originals by Sarah Lee and Johnny. The Guthries also have set some of Woody’s unrecorded lyrics to music. Arlo wrote a haunting melody for his father’s song “My Peace.”

There are so many songs to choose from, in fact, that no one knows what will be played at the evening’s concert.

“The set list is under construction, but that’s typical,” Arlo said. “That’s the other part of the Guthrie family legacy — a predictable irregularity. When you listen to those songs going through time and generations, it puts them in a different perspective. When a fourth generation is still singing about something important, but with their individual style, there’s something magical there.”
