Family Day at the Harn Museum features fun with photograms

January 17, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –– Photographs without a camera? It’s not a digital photography trick. Visitors at the Harn Museum of Art’s Family Day from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, will use the power of the sun and light-sensitive paper to create silhouetted images of objects that are called photograms.

“What’s New Under the Sun? Photograms” is a family-friendly gallery experience that utilizes the museum’s Highlights from the Photography Collection as inspiration. Visitors will make their own photograms by placing objects on special light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light. The objects will leave interesting images on the paper after just a few minutes. The Harn Museum’s monthly Family Days are designed for all ages and admission is free.

Photography has become a larger collecting focus at the Harn Museum in recent years, leading to the creation of a curator of photography position in 2004 and a permanent gallery for the photography collection in 2006. The gallery will feature changing works from the collection every six months.
